fish catchFishing in Russia in 2017 reached a record value of 4.9 million tons over the past 20 years. This is 1.6% higher than last year’s record. This was reported by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, the head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstva) Ilya Shestakov at the meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The head of the department said that positive changes are taking place in all spheres of the industry. So, to increase the production of commercial aquaculture, areas for new fish breeding areas are allocated and put into operation.

Also, according to the deputy minister, there is an increase in the volume of processing capacities for the growth of production, for example, of fishmeal and fish fillets, including for export.

He noted that due to investment quotas there will be a restructuring of production towards the construction of modern vessels with processing capacities on board.

The growth in export indicators for 2017 was also significant – 17% (in value terms).

Ilya Shestakov added that the positive dynamics of the industry development is also characterized by a 7% increase in its gross turnover, and the contribution to GDP (gross domestic product) of the country increased by 5% compared to the indicator of 2016 and reached 230 billion rubles.
