CottonIn Russia this year, 1,000 hectares of land will be planted with cotton. This was reported by Petr Chekmarev, Director of the Department of Plant Production, Mechanization, Chemicalization and Plant Protection, at the All-Russian Agronomic Meeting, which took place on January 31.

According to the head of the Department of Plant Production, in Russia there are 200,000 hectares of land suitable for cultivating cotton. So, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, in the Stavropol Territory, 120,000 hectares can be allocated for the cultivation of cotton, 47,440 hectares in the Astrakhan region, 34,100 ha in Kalmykia, 10,000 in the Volgograd region and in the Crimea.

As a result of the training done on all technological issues, 1,000 hectares will be sown in 2018 in the Astrakhan and Volgograd regions.

Petr Chekmarev justified the need to establish domestic cotton production by the fact that in the next few years its supply from Uzbekistan could stop because the country organizes its own processing industry.

Following the results of 2017, in Russia branch industry companies processed 64,400 tons of cotton. According to forecasts, in 2018 this figure will grow to 68 200 tons, in 2019 – to 71 100 tons.
