FishIn the current year, the volume of fish catching in Russia can reach 5 million tons. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Agriculture – the head of the Federal Fisheries Agency (Rosrybolovstvo), Ilya Shestakov, during the meeting in the Sakhalin region, where issues of development of the Far East fishery complex were discussed.

He recalled that last year Russian fishermen managed to catch a record number of fish – 4.8 million tons. But it is not planned to stop there and the work in this direction continues, said the Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, adding that the new goal is to exceed the 5 million threshold.

Ilya Shestkov noted the special importance of restoring after the 25-year hiatus harvest of sardine Ivasi and mackerel. Last year catch of this fish was insignificant – only 9 thousand tons, however in 2017 Rosrybolovstvo expects growth of the indicators. In the long term, according to experts, the catch of these fish species can grow up to 1 million tons. This will take from 10 to 12 years.

The Deputy Minister also drew attention to the results of the aquaculture industry, the law on which was adopted as early as 2014, but in fact started to act in 2015 only. So, last year the output of aquaculture products increased by 16 percent compared to the previous year and amounted to more than 200 thousand tons.
