SugarDue to the fact that the acreage under the sugar beet this year has been increased by 6 percent, the production of sugar in the Russian Federation may amount to more than 6 million tons. Previously, Russian farmers had never produced such a volume of sugar.

“Actual results refute the pessimistic forecasts of experts, who suggested that by 2020 Russia will be able to produce 5.4 million tons” – said Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Yevgeny Nepoklonov on the current situation in the sugar market at the conference call. He also added that the domestic market needs in sugar are estimated at 5.6-5.8 million tons per year.

Speaking about the export potential of sugar beet, Eugene Nepoklonov said that against the high rates of sugar production it can reach 700 thousand tons.

Basically, Russian sugar is exported to the markets of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Georgia, Syria and Turkmenistan. The CIS countries and China are also promising markets. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, from the beginning of August last year and until July of this year, Russia sold 329,000 tons of sugar to foreign markets.
